Colossians 1:15 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

Hebrews 1:3 3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Without Christ the human soul is dark, as far as understanding the character of God. There is no way to know God except by knowing Christ. Without Christ, God is a just a big mystery to man. People always imagine gods that are filled with lust, passion, anger, strife, contention, and always mingling in battles with other gods and men. They imagine gods that are immoral or amoral, (which is usually the same thing in practical terms). They even imagine that God is female or a mixture of male and female – this is a sure sign they know nothing about Jesus Christ.

People imagine gods with the spirit of men, until they see the Spirit of God manifested in a man – Jesus Christ. Their gods are just overblown men – men with great power, passions, lusts, and the power and ability to fulfill them. How different is the character of Christ! He is God in human nature – not human nature in God!

Absolutely ALL other religions present their concept of God from these wild imaginations – they have no image in a person such as Christ. All their prophets were just men who lived and died and never had a claim, or any evidence they were divine. Mohammed said, “Kill the infidels.” – and he tried to. His followers are still trying to. Jesus said, “Love your enemies,” and “turn the other cheek,” and He did it when they were driving the nails in his hands and feet. His true followers have that same Spirit toward those that hate them, also. Without Christ it is just every man’s opinion as to what God is like – one is as bad as any other.

There is nothing else in creation that reveals God’s character like it is revealed in the life of Jesus Christ. There is plenty of evidence in the creation that God exists and lots of information about Him, but nothing to reveal his heart toward man as Christ does. There is nothing else in creation that wins the affections and excites the wonder of man about God like Jesus does. Again, the evidence of God is there, but not what is needed to break the heart of man and open his eyes to his rebellion against God. People may have some type of faith in God, but it brings forth no practical influence on their life for purity and true holiness until they see Jesus. Until Christ is lifted up and recognized in a person’s life, he sees nothing in God that make him want to worship. The heathen “serve” their gods, and are continually trying to appease them. However, they do not “worship” them, because to worship means to love and adore. They only fear their gods – they do not love them. The hope of most of the pagan religions and cults is to someday become a god themselves so that they will have all the liberty and power to exercise and fulfill their own lusts and passions. This is the very same lie the devil told Eve in the garden and men still believe it!

Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God. It is more than looking at a picture – He is the living, moving, breathing likeness of God in human flesh. To know what God is like we must look at the Spirit of Christ – the kind of spirit He manifested toward God and others as He walked the earth. Again, men imagine their gods with the spirit of men, but Christ was the Spirit of God in a man. He was so different from men that it is obvious He was God incarnate. He was pure – like God, but man is dirty. He was benevolent – like God, but man is selfish. He spoke to the winds and the waves – like God, but men simply fear them. He healed diseases and cast out devils – like God. He had patience and mercy for the common sinner, but extreme contempt and anger for those who were deceiving others about their souls – that is like God. He never came in contact with death unless He conquered it – even his own, and that is like God, but man always loses against death. He had compassion on the poor, the sick, and even the evil, and those who hated him – that is like God, because man simply gets revenge and takes care of himself first.

So if you want to know God, you must know Jesus Christ. He is not the one in the funny-looking medieval pictures you see in churches and cathedrals. He is the One you read about in the New Testament. Read it to find out what He was like as He walked among men. As you read, notice the way He dealt with his enemies and with his friends. Notice his attitude toward those who hated Him. Notice what He says about his mission on earth and what He came to do. You will see the very heart of God toward lost mankind. You will see a different God than the one portrayed by the pagan religions and the many branches of false Christianity. If you see Jesus you have seen the Father. You can see Him through the Scriptures – they all testify of him.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father …John 14:9
