And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight
years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time
in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? John 5:5-6
Wilt thou be made whole? If you will be made whole, then you must, like
this man, realize a few things. First, you must realize that you are NOT
already whole. You must acknowledge that something is missing in your
life. You must recognize the fact that you are not what you should be,
and what you were designed to be. You must quit trying to deceive
yourself and everyone else by trying to substitute what you are, and
what you are doing with your life, for what God wants for you. You must
come to the realization that you would be better off if you had that
part that is missing, and you must obtain it, no matter the cost.
You must recognize that others have something that you do not have. The
fact that this man wasn’t whole was obvious to everyone around him, and
if you aren’t whole it is obvious to everyone around you. The part that
was missing from this man’s life kept him from partaking in any of the
blessings – he was left out while others received. It works the same way
with the rest of us. Without Christ we have no means to obtain the real
blessings of life and eternity. The best we can hope for is just to be
comfortable and enjoy whatever pleasures of the world that we can obtain
by our own efforts.
A sinner is missing the most important part of life. The Holy Spirit of
God is as necessary to the soul as air is to the body. Without God we
can do NOTHING. Without Him we are drifting and have no rudder and no
direction – we are wandering in darkness. Without Him we have no place
of refuge and no help in times of trouble and distress. Without Him
there is a great part of our life that is missing. Without Him we are
not whole.
Second, if you would be made whole then you must realize that you CAN be
made whole. This man had to believe that he COULD be made whole. CAN a
man be made whole? If this isn’t possible then we are without hope and
there is nothing left for us but despair. Many in our day, and all
through the centuries, have said that a man cannot be made whole. Most
of modern Christianity proudly teaches that a man cannot be made whole –
and they call it salvation. The inability of man is the foundation from
which are built all the doctrines of modern, watered-down, weak-kneed,
sinning religion that has filled the churches. A man makes his
meaningless profession, which has no real effect on his life and then he
is saved forever and going to heaven – “whether he wants to or not,” and
that is really all there is to it. The difference between real salvation
and all that phony and deceitful teaching is that real salvation makes a
man whole. He is delivered from sin and from all that has him bound and
he is able to love and serve God here in this present evil world. Sin
has us bound and shut off from the real blessings of life but Jesus
“…came to set the captives free.” He accomplished his mission and
because He did we CAN be made whole. We can be “free from sin” according
to Romans 6:7,18, and 22. This doesn’t mean that we are freed from
temptation, but it does mean that because of the Holy Spirit of God that
dwells within us, and the Word of God we have hidden in our heart, we
have a way of escape that God has provided. (1 Cor 10:13) Call it
perfection if you like – God calls it salvation! Those who have no
message of real deliverance for a hopeless sinner should stop preaching!
And those who are always crying about the need for revival might as well
give up because it isn’t going to happen until they start preaching a
gospel that delivers from sin. No revival has ever happened where this
weak, powerless, easy-believism, sinning religion with no repentance is
preached – and there never will be a revival under the preaching of
those doctrines of devils.
You CAN be made whole! You CAN be made a new creature in Christ, with
old things passed away and ALL things become new! Jesus found a most
deranged and degenerate creature living among the tombs, naked, cutting
himself, and crying night and day, and left him sitting calmly, clothed,
and in his right mind. He was made whole. That same Jesus can do the
SAME thing for any sinner who will come to Him now. Do you know any
people who need to be made whole? Do you have a loved one like this?
There is hope for them if they will come to Jesus! They CAN be made
whole!
Now the question is: “WILT thou be made whole?” Jesus didn’t ask if he
COULD – He asked if he WOULD. Jesus did not ask the man if he WISHED to
be made whole – He asked if he WOULD. Salvation is possible for anyone
…who WILL COME.
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth
say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him
take the water of life freely. Rev. 22:17
If you will not come to Jesus it can only be because of your stubborn
will. You will only have a stubborn will if you are full of foolish
pride. It is FOOLISH to be proud when you have no answers for life and
eternity – especially when they are so readily available to you.
Everyone who knows you knows that you are not whole. It is obvious to
everyone else, so you aren’t fooling anyone but yourself, and your pride
only makes you look more foolish.
When the prodigal son came to himself he resolved, “I WILL ARISE and go
to my father.” It wasn’t just a mental exercise – he actually got up and
did it – and he was made whole. The question is directed to YOU – not to
Jesus. He is willing – but what YOU WILL do is the issue.
And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord,
if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand,
and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his
leprosy was cleansed. Matt. 8:2-3
WILL you come to Jesus and be made whole? WILL you trade your empty
heart for a heart full of joy, gladness, and love? WILL you give up your
groping in the darkness and hand the reins of your life to Him who is
the Light? God can do no more for you than he has already done to save
your soul. He gave his Son and then sent his Holy Spirit. He has given
us his infallible and perfect written Word. He says that anyone who WILL
may come and drink of the water of life freely. WILL you? Your eternal
destiny is in your hands. What WILL you do with Jesus?
